A number of welding professional associations and companies offer certifications for welders. Welding certifications provide welders with legitimacy in the field, additional knowledge through certification classes and an opportunity to prove their welding skills to potential employers. Because welders use different types of welds and welding processes, certification providers have classified welding certifications into different categories.

Welding Processes

Welders can get certifications in the most common types of welding processes -- shielded metal arc, gas tungsten arc and gas metal arc welding. A main provider of welding certifications, the American Welding Society, AWS, uses additional classifications for the other welding processes, such as short circuit gas metal arc, flux cored arc, submerged arc and brazing. AWS gives each type of welding process certification an acronym. For example, AWS classifies shield metal arc welding as SMAW.

Position and Type

The position and type of weld are another main classification welders use when earning certification. The position describes the placement of the metal plate or pipe the welder works on and includes flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead for plate welds. For pipes, the positions include vertical, 45-degree vertical and restricted. Groove weld and fillet weld describe the two types of welds most commonly used. Welders use numbers to describe the position and a letter to describe the type of weld for certifications. For example, metal plate flat groove weld is classified as 1G.

Gases, Filler Metal and Base Metal

Welders use several different types of gases and receive certification in each of the types, which include argon, helium, argon/carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide. Certification providers use each gas's periodical table designation to classify that gas. The AWS also offers certification classifications for the filler metals and base metals welders use. Filler metals get an AWS classification number and AWS uses classification from the American Society for Testing and Materials for the base metals classification. The base metal classification describes the types of metals being welded and that metal's tensile and yield strength.

Types of Certifications

Each certification provider has numerous types of certifications. Along with general Certified Welder designations, AWS also offers Certified Robotic Arc Welding, Certified Welding Engineer, Certified Welding Inspector, Certified Welding Educator, Certified Welding Supervisor, Certified Welding Sales Representative and Certified Welding Fabricator designations. Certification classifications for welding also come in the form of codes, including Structural Welding Code for Steel, Structural Welding Code for Aluminum, Tubular Structures, Light Gauge Steel, Reinforcing Steel, Sheet Metal Welding, Chemical Plant and Petroleum Pipe Welding and Railroad Welding. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers offers codes for welding boiler and pressure vessels and the American Petroleum Institute has its own codes for welding gas and oil pipelines.
