Great book despite the other reviews.
Reviewed in the United States on 17 May 2007 Verified Purchase I thought this book was worth reading. Yes, I've read the other reviews that said it was too simplified and for idiots but for someone who has never welded, or like me has not welded since high school, it covers the basics. It gives a good comparison of different technologies (Oxy, SMAW, MIG, TIG and plasma) the pros/cons of each. No, this book will not teach you how to weld like a pro but it is a good starting point if you want to learn about the various technologies or trying to decide what type of welder you want or need to get started. The Welder's Handbook (Finch) is also a good beginner's guide.

Too many stars?
Reviewed in the United States on 14 October 2012 Verified Purchase This book gives you the basics of welding. That much is stated in the title. It does not give a lot of instruction but touches on enough to get you started. The best thing is the section on projects. It includes ideas on bending and jigs for bending as well as plenty of ideas for building beautiful things out of readily available metal. To me this is about what to weld...rather than how to weld. Buy it and enjoy it I did.

Great buy for 1st timers
Reviewed in the United States on 16 June 2004 Verified Purchase This book if filled with the basics of welding on a practical level. Things like: what your need, procedures, how to weld, and projects. The lavish photos and illustrations make welding much easier by comparing your weld with the book. I learned everything I know from this book, and when I welded my first time I failed....but now I'm much better. Practice makes perfect. Overall, a great book for the price!

Little SMAW Coverage
Reviewed in the United States on 3 January 2007 Verified Purchase My weld process of choice is Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). Unfortunately, there is not nearly enough detail in this book to make it even marginally useful to SMAW welders. MIG, TIG, and Oxy/Acetylene are covered to far greater depth. Since it was my own expectations that were not met, I went with a relatively neutral 3-star rating. This book might be just fine if your process is other than SMAW.

Top international reviews
Very serious book, a reference even, it inventories the different kinds of welding, and above all, most important, it insists on the safety; thus, precious tips concern your own protection (gloves, goggles, mask...) and the others protection (shop arrangement, fire extinguisher..., and the specific manipulation of the welding tools, if they are oxyacetylene tanks, arc, ....
This book is cheap and is a must, to be recommended.
